Nathaniel was seated out in the open of a pretty little café in a neutral province. He had done his research to find a province, a place linked to neither man. It hadn’t been easy, the Troys and Herondales reach extended everywhere in Dharo. He was calm as he sat there; calm as he could be given the situation he amended to himself.  He knew Rainor by sight at least, so unless the male showed up shielded he would be known. Nate hadn’t taken the normal position for the first arrival. Most, he knew, would have taken the defensive seat. It was instinctual. Nate had instead taken a side seat. He still had awareness but his back wasn’t protected. He was trying to send the message of relative trust and equality. He supposed Rainor would instead make some conclusion about Nate’s sanity or risk taking. Or some other poor judgement of Nate.

Nate didn’t care. He was trying to put his best foot forward. Did he want to work with a Herondale? Mother Night no. Did he want to cause Amelia to stuffer? No. So he would do what he could to set aside his pride and his upbringing to at least talk to Rainor. Persis had offered Nate the Master of the Guard position, a decent one for the man who had ruled Amelia for a year. He knew the people and the land, which few in her Court would. The problem is he was being forced to step down for her and to work with males he didn’t know. He wasn’t called to Persis but she seemed solid, solid enough that he could stomach serving for a bit.

He gave a light smile to the waiter who set down more food and coffee for Nate. He felt Rainor’s dark presence before he saw him. Nate made brief eye contact with the man and gestured to the chairs for the other warlord prince. He didn’t stand, he supposed he should but this wasn’t their first meeting. Protocol was iffy. “Prince Herondale, thank you for joining me.”

Rainor was feeling many things lately, most of them negative. He was confused about what Lady Bailey was doing. And angry. He was insulted that Persis had chosen to bring a different escort when she went to meet with Nathaniel Troy. And angry. He was stressed from attempting to make arrangements for his children since he was absolutely not bringing them to Amelia. And angry.

On multiple occasions, he considered just saying no to the entire thing and leaving the court, but then what would he do? His mother would want him to join their new heir's court, which would land him in Amelia and change very little about what he was angry about. He would still be living in the Troy province, away from his children. And Lady Bailey would still be thinking it was a good idea to anger Warlord Princes who had voted for her. Rainor had never regretted his vote for a Queen more, and if she continued down this path, he certainly would not be voting for her again.

Rainor arrived at the cafe Nate had suggested they meet at and stood outside, examining the building for a moment. He had not actually told Persis where he was going or why, just that he would be gone for the day. He didn't want to give her the opportunity to tell him not to go, didn't want to feel again like she didn't trust him to behave.

With a sigh, Rainor decided he should get this meeting over with and get back to spending time with his children. His son was handling everything far better than his daughter was. He headed into the cafe and after a cursory scan of the patrons, Rainor spotted Nathaniel. He returned the other Warlord Prince's greeting with a nod and since Nate didn't stand, Rainor simply sat, choosing the defensive position with a fleeting thought about how Nate had not done so. A future Master of the Guard who does not choose the secure position? Well, he was a Troy.

"What is it you wanted to discuss?" He asked. There were many things they should talk about, and so Rainor decided to let Nate choose where to start.

Nate watched Rainor and sympathized in his own way. He didn’t voice this or acknowledged his sympathy. He wasn’t sure what to expect from the Herondale. Nate had been raised to feel and think that every Herondale was a rival and in some ways a threat. The other strong family in the territory, they often competed for influence, Nate suggested it had only gotten more heated with the war. They had in all fairness started on the same side. Over the years of the Civil War they turned to rival each other, trying to control the influence to control the territory. Instead of one of their puppets on the throne, they had Leslie Bailey who was moving her pieces. Nate wasn’t sure her end game but he did not like the Herondales in his province but Rainor would be far from the first. He also believed Persis was a decent queen and he would yield for his province to thrive. Even if it hurt.

Nate was a tad surprised Rainor just jumped into it. He didn’t small talk; he seemed to Nate to just want results. He seemed resigned.  Nate, cautious due to the subject raised a Sapphire shield to keep what was said between them. “I am not sure where to start, it seems like a rather long list to me.” He paused, his eyes distance for a moment. “I am not happy with this arrangement. I’d rather not be turning my province over however I will do what ever it takes for Amelia to thrive. Not for the sake of my family but for the sake of the people how are only trying to rebuild their lives.” He took a steadying breath so his temper didn’t flare over his emotions and thoughts.

“I realize that you have little desire to work with me. I’m not called to Lady Kersin, I barely know her. I’m a threat and Amelia is a threat to you.” His blue eyes hardened a little as he spoke. “I don’t like two Red jeweled Blood entering the highest positions in my Province because of a Queen’s meddling,” he snarled, remembering the anger over Bailey’s ‘request’. “However even with my family’s backing, I risk more by fighting her. I won’t be the cause of another War just to stay in power. My hands are tied in this matter and I would like you to know that. I will do what ever is necessary for Amelia, including serving in a Court. Some thing I had avoided my entire life.” He was airing his thoughts, partly because there were few other people he could. Also because Rainor was Persi’s male, a member of her Triangle. He deserved to know what Nate was feeling. He did his best to keep any threats out of his voice; he would kill to protect Amelia. He was also inviting Rainor to speak his mind. To rage even.

This was not what Rainor expected. He merely glanced to the side when he felt the Sapphire shield. He thought about reinforcing it with a Red, but decided not to; it might be insulting. It might be taken as a threat. It was neither of those, but Nate was a Troy so Rainor could only guess at how he might react. And if the sudden outpouring of Nate's recent life story was anything to go by, Rainor thought he'd made the right decision in refraining.

Rainor wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with this. He certainly was not about to go around telling a Troy how he felt. That this Troy was willing to do so either made him an idiot or planning something. It made Ranior suspicious.

"At least your home isn't being turned over to another Territory," Rainor replied in a flat tone. It was flat because the only other emotion he would have gotten into it was fury, and that seemed anything but constructive at the moment. He could have gone on. At least Nate got to continue living at home. At least none of the children in his family were being forcibly uprooted and moved elsewhere. At least Nate didn't have to try to figure out a how to explain why their grandmother - their mom's mom - was losing the home she had owned for her entire adult life - the home they knew as well.

"You would hardly be in a position to fight," Rainor continued. "The Navy answers to her - who would protect your shipping lanes? What would the other Provinces think of a large amount of their food supply being taken away so a Warlord Prince can continue to rule when a strong Queen was trying to be elected? Perhaps Dalarna would stand with you, but do you think Pitary, Salajaro, and Dematia would?" Beinn was in no position to support anyone. He had added Dematia for his own dark amusement.

"I am glad to know that you're intelligent enough to see that, at least." The words were mild. Rainor's eyes flicked to the door when someone else walked in, then back to the Troy in front of him after deciding the pair of witches were no threat. "So you invited me here to complain about the Territory Queen?"
