Little Talks

Glancing around the room, Shiori wondered which of the other guests were Herondales that she should probably get to know. Some she had already met, like Rainor, who had seemed nice enough, if a bit distant. She supposed it made sense. She didn't know what to make of them, and they were probably at a loss as well, especially because, as she had learned, Rainor's late sister was the previous heir.

Shiori's First Escort, Bryson Barret, an Opal Jeweled Warlord Prince, stood at her side, giving Remidee a bit of a break. His hand rested briefly on her upper back as she looked around again, drawing her attention up to him instead.

"Lady? Who would you like to talk to?" He asked. Truthfully, she was about ready to be done with this, but she also didn't want to be the first to leave. She was tired, though. Bryson had asked, so Shiori looked around and then spotted a male she was sure was a Herondale.

"Him?" She said, tilting her head towards him. Bryson followed her gaze and then nodded. Shiori rested her hand on his as he led the way over to Tobias, or at least, who she really, really hoped was Tobias. There were a lot of Herondales for her to keep straight.

"Prince Herondale?" Bryson addressed him with a bow according to Protocol. "I would like to introduce Lady Shiori Yukimura." She wasn't entirely sure how to address him. He was her family and yet he was a stranger. She chose to step forward and bow according to Protocol as well.

"Prince," she greeted him with a smile.

Tobias had relinquished his escort duties reluctantly to one of Etain's many family members, assuring her by psychic thread that despite his agitation in the crowd he would be fine during her brief absence. He'd taken the opportunity to find another glass of wine and put his back against a wall, and now was trying to keep from obviously staring at Etain. It was her family, she was safe, and the male had no plans that might explain the urge Tobias had to break every bone in the arm Etain was resting against.

He was so focused on watching and acting like he wasn't that he had neglected his peripheral vision, and only noticed the two when the escort spoke his name. For just a moment, in his stressed state, his instincts reacted first to the slight surprise. The twist to face them was slightly too fluid, one foot stepping back to give him better balance if it came to a fight, before his mind caught up again and he turned the movement into a bow. It wasn't quite as graceful as he'd like, but it hopefully hid the slight stutter of his control.

“Lady Yukimura, Tobias Herondale. A pleasure to meet you.” Tobias matched her smile, though his was slightly more strained. He was grateful he'd practiced the pronunciation of her name once he'd heard about the 'Herondale Queen', it flowed off his tongue naturally now despite the loss of his mental footing. He gave a smaller bow, more of a nod, to acknowledge her escort, judging the other male. Even without his jewel of rank the Sapphire was dark enough to best the Opal, the man likely wasn't a threat. The Queen however, well, she was basically an unknown.

“You rule the Bern-Kaes District of Amelia, correct? I do hope that our family connection coming to light hasn't caused any issues with Prince Troy.” Tobias took the opportunity to glance over to Etain as though looking for the Sapphire jeweled Warlord Prince in the group of his family. Etain was still fine, she had barely moved, this wasn't some distraction to snatch her away. “I get the distinct impression he isn't a great supporter of the Herondales.” His attention returned to the Queen in front of him and this time the smile was mischevious, as though inviting her to confess the shortcomings of the leader of another major family were all in good fun, and not an attempt to gather something damning on the man. Considering his ties to Etain Tobias would likely never use the information, but it was practically second nature to try and gather it. Besides the feeling was mutual, he wasn't Nathaniel Troy's best friend and having something over the man might come in handy in the future.

Oh good. This was actually a Herondale. Shiori would have felt rather foolish if he wasn't. She would have just smiled through an apology for it, but still felt silly. As it was, she was impressed that he said her name with ease; although most could pronounce it, it was sometimes choppy or hesitant, not that she minded when it was wrong. It was not a usual name for this Territory.

"Well, I'm sure he's not particularly pleased," Shiori said, taking note of the mischievous smile. She had one of those on her face often, much to the dismay of several of her court members, her current escort included. And then she was torn. She was officially a Herondale. An important one, rather than from a distant branch and without even having the name. At the same time, Nate Troy ruled the Province she lived in, and she thought he was doing a good job. On top of that, she liked him personally.

"He hasn't been giving me any trouble, though," she said. It was the truth anyway; if Tobias was looking for any sort of interesting gossip, there wasn't any to be had. Even if there was, Shiori liked hearing gossip, but didn't like to be involved in it, and so she may not have told him anyway.

"I've been given a crash course in Herondales, and I've heard that you've been spending some time in Amelia, too?" Shiori asked. With Etain, she thought she remembered reading, but that was all the note had said. It listed names and usual locations. His was Amelia.

Nothing he could use against the older man, damn. It would've been nice to have some rumour about Prince Troy mistreating his Queens, something to take the other man down a peg or two. He could still make one up, but it wouldn't be the same. The mischievousness slipped out of Tobias' smile and he tried to look like he was happy to hear that all was well with his...cousin? That was close enough to their relationship. “That's good to hear. You've been Queen of Bern-Kaes since the war, meaning you've served under Prince Troy since he took command of Amelia, haven't you?”

It was a little blunt and obvious, Tobias was out of practice, but as a general question to open the discussion of the other man up a little it worked. He didn't know this strange woman's loyalty, the likely future leader of his house, she had worked for Troy for a year now, if she was completely loyal to him it would be disastrous for the Herondales. The whole house could be sworn to fealty, lose titles and lands, any of a number of damaging things if this woman was made the Herondale Matriarch and was loyal to a Troy instead. He knew that everything he had said was true, what he was really asking was where her loyalty lay.

Her question surprised him a little and Tobias took a quick sip of his wine to give himself a moment. Unbidden his eyes flicked towards Etain, the reason for his repeated visits to Amelia, before he forced them back. She was fine, and his tension eased a little on seeing her laughing with her family. He wanted to reach out to her with a psychic thread, but that would be selfish, taking her away from her family. Instead he focused on the Black widow Queen infront of him and faked nonchalance.

“Some.” Tobias admitted with a slight shrug as though it were nothing. “I've done a little sampling of the wineries that have reopened. They aren't quite up to the usual standard, but it's a mark of pride for Beaune that they've reopened so soon. I've spoken to Prince Troy once or twice, trying to normalize relations between the noble families after the war.” He smiled a little at that, calling back to earlier and leaving it unsaid that he hadn't been particularly successful.

None of that was a lie technically, but it did entirely omit his interest in Etain. If this woman were loyal to Prince Troy he wasn't about to bare his heart to her. Darkness, he wouldn't do that even if she were a Herondale, Tobias wasn't ready to tell his grandmother about his feelings for Etain, and he was damned if someone else was going to. First he had to find Sibylla, then things would get a lot simpler, he hoped.

"I have, yes," Shiori said. "The population isn't very high, but we have a lot of farmland to take care of." She thought that made things simpler for her. It was easy to get small groups of people focused in one direction, rather than large groups. She also liked being able to personalll help them with their fields and see what issues they were having.

Shiori knew of the wineries reopening and thought it was a bit of a waste of effort and large amounts of water when what they still needed to grow was food, especially since it took years to get enough grapes to make wine, which meant they were concentrating on grapes for those years while people were strugglign to eat. She chose not to say speak of her distaste for this, though. Mostly she didn't want it to get back to Nate that she didn't approve of something going on in his Province, especially since he hadn't been ruling when that started. She also didn't want to give Tobias something against Nate since the Herondales and Troys didn't exactly get along.

She chose instead to focus on what he said about normalizing relationships between the families. They might be generally at odds, but it would help the territory as a whole for them to at least cooperate on things that mattered.

"Maybe that's something I could help with," Shiori suggested. "I have, well, rapport I suppose, with Nathaniel Troy, which could possibly be beneficial for your attempts." It wouldn't be easy, she knew, because her new role in the Herondale family was something she supposed a lot of people were still getting used to. Shiori thought that a fair number of them probably still saw her only as a distant relative, rather than the new heir. She also wasn't sure what Nate personally thought now that one of his Queens was to be so involved with his family's rival. Previously she'd had a good working relationship with him, though, so she hoped to continue that.

Tobias nodded at Shiori's description of her lands, he hadn't been sure (even his memory and briefings couldn't remember every detail of every bit of land) but he had been under the impression that Bern-Kaes was mostly just farmland with barely a village across it. Not exactly an easy stepping stone to ruling a Province, or an aristo family. This woman wasn't much older than him, and based on her own description of her District probably had about as much experience actually ruling. “Farmland is important in the current circumstances.” He allowed, keeping his voice neutral. It was true, but not the experience Tobias had hoped the future matriarch of the Herondales might have.

He thought he saw something flash across Shiori's face for just an instant at the mention of the wine, and Tobias had to contain a smirk. So apparently she didn't agree with everything the Troy's did. Perhaps she wasn't entirely a puppet, but Tobias still wasn't keen on allowing her to run his family into the ground.

“Rapport?” Tobias' voice was neutral as he raised one eyebrow inquisitively. It wasn't quite so forward as to be a scandalous accusation, but a light probing to see if there was anything more to the relationship between this Queen and Prince Troy. He doubted it, and Shiori would likely not admit it if there were such a relationship, but her reaction would tell him for sure.

“Any good words you can put in for us would be appreciated. The Territory has been through a lot, it would be in everyone's best interest to make sure no other... unpleasantness happens in the near future. Everyone wants to give the land time to heal.” It was all meaningless platitudes, but not untrue. None of the families trusted one another, but no-one wanted outright war again so soon.

"Yes, we have a good working relationship since he rules the Province," Shiori replied, tipping her head, not entirely sure what Tobias might have been implying. The good working relationship was her opinion, anyway, and Nate had never given her any reason to think otherwise. She thought that he was doing a good job, even if he was probably in a little over his head, as she suspected anyone would have been with the current situation.

"Of course. Having cooperation seems to be what everyone needs right now. Perhaps we can help get the territory moving in one direction, especially with the raids in Beinn." They hardly felt like they were real from her distant proximity in Amelia, and the provinces felt like disjointed territories on their own sometimes, rather than part of a larger whole, despite having all gone through the same disaster.

"Perhaps in the future, the two families can come to some sort of truce that would be beneficial for everyone." Shiori really didn't expect anything since both sides seemed so entrenched in whatever reasons they had to dislike each other, but it would be nice anyway.

Tobias watched for any hint of deception in Shiori's eyes, but he couldn't see it. She must be good to not even flinch at the accusation, there was no way she was really so innocent that she hadn't caught it... Was there? She hadn't been born an Aristo, was someone truly so out of touch of the game being raised to the heir of his house? Tobias preferred not to believe it, it would keep him on his toes, and it was less troubling.

Nodding along with her platitudes like they truly meant anything, Tobias took a sip of his wine and stole another surreptitious look towards Etain. For their sake he wanted cooperation between houses, it would make his conscience a lot cleaner if he didn't have to go against his house for Etain's sake. If it weren't for her... Well, Prince Troy hadn't exactly endeared Tobias to his house, and he had little personal experience with the others, so they could go to the Darkness for all he cared. He didn't comment on any possible truce, he didn't want anything getting back to Prince Troy out of context, but he did latch on to the other topic the Queen offered.

“The raids are quite troubling.” Tobias agreed with a frown and a nod, Glacia taking advantage of Dharo's weakness wasn't a good sign and they could get more bold any day. “I believe I noticed the Warlord Prince of Beinn earlier, perhaps he'll bring the matter to the attention of the summit over the next few days?”

"I hope so," Shiori said. "It's not a problem that will necessarily just affect Beinn. If Glacia decided they wanted more, since they also have a small border with Valencay, and are close to Dalarna there, too." Shiori assumed that the fact that it was right on the coast meant that they Navy would protect it, but all they had to do was cross more inland, and there was not much the Navy would be able to do to stop it.

Shiori supposed it wasn't really her business, except that she couldn't help but worry about what this was doing to the land in Beinn, as well as the people. The lack of Queens there troubled her as well because the land was being damaged, and there were few to help repair it. And, because they were still worried about dealing with Glacia, she also knew that it could put more of a strain on Amelia's farms since the people of Beinn would be less able to provide for themselves, especially when what resources they did have were being taken from them.

"Hopefully Lady Bailey will have some solutions for him - or maybe they've already been discussing things." She shrugged. It seemed like something the Territory Queen should be helping to handle at this point. "It makes Dharo look more vulnerable, which could make other Territories decide they want to do the same thing." Not that Dharo had a lot to steal at the moment, but there was apparently enough for Glacian raiders to continue stealing from Beinn.

“A small border, but that means a more predictable route, or more time on the Winds for us to prepare. As for attacking by sea, well we have some representatives from the Navy here today who can hopefully assuage those worries.” Tobias allowed, he was no military expert, but he had some training when he was younger. As far as he had heard the attacks on Beinn were minor raids, not a full scale invasion as Queen Yukimura suggested. It didn't seem likely that the raiders would penetrate further when they had the whole of Beinn to pillage. The Province was being ruled by a commoner, a former guard if he had heard right. Tobias couldn't be sure how much of Beinn's current troubles were due to the raids, and how much was simply mismanagement.

Of course even if Valencay and Dematia were hit, Dematia would be safe. It would be interesting to see when and if the other Provinces reacted, fractured as the Territory was. Perhaps never? Each Province remaining in their borders and being taken one by one, though that was unlikely.

Tobias frowned a little at Shiori's speculation, tilting his head slightly. “Have you heard any rumours of the sort? As I understand it our relationship with Nhakava is steady, and Askavi already passed up one chance to invade Ludea during the war.” Those were the only other neighbouring territories, anyone else who wished to invade would have to pass through them, or swing through Nhakava's waters to do it. Anyone who tried to sneak an armed force through and was caught would be in for a diplomatic incident far more costly than any gain that could be expected.

A predictable path didn't mean, to Shiori, that the Glacians might not try, especially if they thought the Dharo's focus was on protecting Beinn. Or - if they realized how little focus on that there currently seemed to be. It made her worry that things could get worse.

"I haven't, although I'm sure that as a District Queen so far from the border, I'm not really on anyone's gossip list for that sort of thing." Some of her males had contacts within courts closer to Beinn, but overall it was not something her court was concerning itself with, beyond what help was asked of them as far as food and resources, which so far, had been none beyond the normal level since the war ended.

"I just worry that the situation could change, but I suppose that is something for the Territory Queen to worry about more than me." Until being contacted by Edith, Shiori had been content to rule her District, helping the land and people recover. Now she had far more to concern herself with, assuming the family didn't suddenly decide they didn't want her anymore, as abruptly as they had taken interest in her. Shiori usually tried not to think about that, either: that they hadn't paid attention to her until they needed something.
