Feel the Tide

Shiori's neck was beginning to hurt from all the looking up she was doing tonight. At least during dinner, she had been able to look across the table at those she was talking to, but more socializing followed the meal, which required more looking up. Maybe she would wear higher heels next time to help with that.

Despite her neck pain, Shiori was enjoying herself. She hoped that there could be more events like this in the future; maybe she could host some sort of event in her district now that they were recovering more. They might be able to produce enough food this year to justify a celebration.

She stood with Remi, dwarfed by his height as they spoke with a male ruling a district in another Province. Shiori's district was fairly well off compared to his, which she supposed was partially because there wasn't a Queen dedicated to his district's care. It made her wonder if she should offer to help, but she wasn't sure how she could do so without stepping on the toes of the Province's Queen. Something for her to think on at any rate. She would also need to convince her court that it was a good idea because they wouldn't want her to spread herself too thin.

Eventually the conversation came to an end and Shiori smiled at the male as he excused himself to continue mingling.

Cenric, after hours of steadily drinking far more than his share of wine, was just beginning to get drunk. Not falling down drunk, though he was aiming for it by the end of the night, but he had managed a nice buzz. It was a rare feeling, Beinn's treasury wasn't so deep that he could regularly afford to buy the alcohol required to intoxicate someone wearing a Red jewel, and he was usually too busy to want to, but tonight fuck it. If he had to sit around and talk all night in this damn suit he was going to get his money's worth.

At least he wasn't wearing his tie any more, as soon as he'd gotten done talking to Prince Troy he'd removed the damn thing. The other man wasn't wearing one, and neither were a few other males scattered about, and he was going to be damned if he gave a possible enemy a noose to strangle him with.

He'd managed to become seperated from his people by this point, late in the night after dinner. Aaron and Maira were probably off canoodling somewhere, and Boudicca... Who knew where Boudicca was? She'd floated around with him for part of the night, but he couldn't see her at the moment. Not that that meant much, at her size she was practically invisible in crowds, and the psychic scents in this room were dark and confused enough he'd have been hard pressed to pick out even her distinctive triple caste.

In no particular hurry to mingle once more though knowing he should, Cenric let his eyes wander over the crowd, pausing at a couple stranger than any other he'd seen tonight. A woman shorter than Boudicca, and a man approximately his height, and both obviously not native to Dharo, and both wearing dark jewels. Very dark, in the man's case. Curious and seeing no better targets, Cenric (with a small detour to get a new drink) made his way to the pair. “Cenric Kabler, Warlord Prince of Beinn. May I have the pleasure of being introduced?” He had learnt since his first interaction of the night, better to let the escort introduce him before he addressed the Queen directly.

Now was the conundrum. The other male wore a darker jewel, but (unless Cenric missed his guest) the man was merely an escort, a social rank far below Cenric's. Well, better to come across as overconfident and strong rather than uncertain and weak. He offered his hands palm down claiming dominance in formal greeting, and placing himself as the leader of the conversation. The whole time he watched the other man's eyes, drunkenness temporarily pushed back by keyed up nerves. If Cenric was misreading the other male and he attacked, he'd only have a second to act.

Remi was going to check his contract after he choked it out of the damn Steward, who was not always keen to give up things like paperwork to him. Apparently he gave off the air of someone who might not deal with such fragile things like paper very nicely. The Steward also didn’t like that Remi had once joked that if he dealt with lovers the same way he dealt with his paperwork than the Steward could have enough lovers to fill a Red Moon house.

He then had to explain what a Red Moon house was, since, apparently Kaeleer was just too damn special to have such thing as whores or at least whores who organised themselves. So now every time Remi mentioned lovers, whores, sex or females in general the Steward would hide his paperwork and give him a look that would melt bone. Remi was lucky that his bones were not of the easily melted variety.

Though, he decided, if he had to stick around this room with these people in this suit much longer than his bones would actually melt, along with his temper, self-control and a very other people. The male before them looked ripe for a melting, but he’d made good his escape before the tall Warlord Prince could decide if melting someone was a good idea or even possible.

“Can we leave?” he said when the male was gone, looking down at the Queen he was escorting whilst pulling the collar of his shirt. He’d refused to wear a tie, refused to wear a jacket and refused to button up or tuck his shirt in properly. He’d even refused to tie his long hair back, instead letting it fall where ever it wanted.

He’d have refused to run a brush through it, but, his hair really never needed that much brushing. This he mourned, because he would have rather enjoyed annoying people by claiming to be badly misused by the small Queen beside him.

”Look how hard she rides me?” he’d have said, waving his matted hair in their face “Don’t even have time to brush my hair. She’s insatiable.”

He was about to say more to Shiori when a Warlord Prince approached them, introducing himself as the Warlord Prince of Beinn and extending his hands out in a greeting. The Shaladorian knew what he was supposed to do, what protocol dictated he was supposed to do but he was feeling in enough of a rebellious mood and all he did was hook a thumb at Shiroi.

“Speak to her,” he rumbled trying to sound meek but failing “I’m not allowed to speak to strangers or at all.” He shrugged and sighed sadly “She says the only thing I am allowed to do with my mouth is pleasure her.”

Remi was a bit of a wildcard. Shiori knew that he knew Protocol - possibly better than she did; she wasn't sure on that. It was just that she couldn't seem to predict when he'd actually follow it and when he wouldn't. She had thought that this night would make him a bit more predictable, but she had been wrong. His clothes had been met with little more than a bit of a frown on her part. It had been the first sign that tonight changed nothing. She rather enjoyed the disheveled look, though she thought that perhaps this was not the place for it, not that she had told him that.

"Soon, maybe," she told him. Shiori would have liked to leave, but she had a feeling that it would be a while before that could happen, especially when she noticed the Warlord Prince heading their way. She wondered which side of Remi he was going to get as he offered a formal greeting.

Ah, that side. Shiori managed not to sigh when he did not respond as Protocol dictated. Thinking that he was done, Shiori opened her mouth to greet Cenric, but Remi kept talking and her open mouth with a smile became a surprised look. By the time her escort was actually through, all she could do was sputter for a moment.

"Remi!" She managed to squawk at him, although she hardly looked annoyed, which was because she was not annoyed. She was surprised, and amused. She huffed at him and then turned her attention back to Cenric, gathering as much composure as she could while putting a smile on her face.

"Shiori Yukimura, Queen of Bern-Kaes District, Amelia." She hooked her thumb to mimic Remi. "This is Remidee Durand. It's nice to meet you, Prince Kabler." She considered countering Remi's claims as to what he was and was not allowed to do with his mouth, but wasn't sure if it would be believable for her to do so, especially since she didn't know if Cenric believed it.

Cenric was many things (warrior, leader, and protector foremost among them), but he wasn't particularly stuck on rules. He was irreverent, sometimes crude, and always up for a dirty joke. With all that said, the Ebon Gray Warlord Prince's words shocked him into silence momentarily. His mind had been full of formal bowing, scraping, and trying not to go slowly insane from boredom for hours, maybe he'd just finally lost it. He was going to be shipped off to somewhere with nice padded walls and soothing potions, just like Boudicca deserved to be.

Except apparently he hadn't misheard, and when his more than slightly drunk brain caught up and he stopped staring like he'd been poleaxed Cenric couldn't help a quick grin at the other man and barely managed to avoid a laugh as the Queen squawked. He controlled it a little as he turned to the Queen in case she wasn't amused, but she seemed to have a good sense of humour about the lewd joke. He gave her a slight nod vaguely reminiscent of a bow, though obviously these two at least weren't much more interested in formal protocol than he was.

Another Queen from Amelia? How many did Nathaniel Troy have stashed away caring for his province while Beinn's land died with no Queens to tend to it? It'd serve the pompous Aristo asshole right if Cenric managed to poach one, and this Queen seemed a lot more approachable than the other. “The pleasure's mine, but I've got to say  you picked a strange escort to bring considering his, uh, duties. Unless this party is going to get a lot more interesting really soon and no-one told me?” His grin this time was that of someone in on the joke, rather than just one of surprise. This was going to be a fun conversation. Aaron might kill him if he knew Cenric just made a joke about the party turning into some sort of orgy, but hopefully he'd never know.

“Have you opened with that line on anyone else here, or am I just special?” Cenric asked, his attention turning to the escort, Remidee. How committed was he to the bit, would he push his Queen further? Cenric probably shouldn't be egging the other man on, but he enjoyed the absurd lewdity after the stuffy formality of the night.

“See how she introduces me?” he queried the other Warlord Prince, keeping himself in character of over used male, though also assessing the male before him. He’d heard all about Beinn, a place that was being raided frequently by their neighbouring Territory. His understanding was that they had few Queens and the Warlord Prince who ruled there really needed to brush up on his manners. Remi had liked the sound of him and his reaction hadn’t disappointed the tall male at all.

“I’m not Prince Durand, I’m just Remi. Remi the male she rides harder than she would her horses.” He sighed deeply, ignoring her former squawking. The little Queen would learn to deal with him or she wouldn’t “And I’m not really her escort, she brought me to show off the power she has under her.” He threw a pretend hurt look at Shiori, and then leant a little closer to Prince Kabler.

“It’s not a line, it is the truth.” He said, pretending to be aghast, though he allowed a small smile to creep through “She’s been whoring me out all night, I have terrible chafing.” Taking a deep breath he sighed dramatically, then threw a look at the small Queen whilst mock swallowing “I shouldn’t say anymore, she likes…punishment.”

He hung his head low, some long dark hair sliding over his shoulder to cover the side of his face attempting to look as beaten down as possible, only to raise his head slightly and mouth ‘Save me’ and the one doubt amused Warlord Prince before him.

"Oh, I couldn't possibly have come here without him," Shiori responded to Cenric's comment on her choice of escort. She hoped he caught the double entendre she meant the words to have, even if that part wasn't true. She already doubted this conversation was going to be all that serious, so she figured it was best to simply join in.

She schooled her face into something akin to exasperation as Remi continued with his act. It would have been more convincing if she could completely wipe the amusement from her eyes. It seemed, at least, that Cenric was only playing along and that he didn't really think Remi was being truthful. She hoped. Either way, he was going along with it, and it was entertaining. Shiori liked to have fun.

This wasn't quite what she was expecting from the Warlord Prince of Beinn. Given the condition of his Province, she was expecting him to be more serious or worn, or even unhappy, but maybe this was a time he had decided to enjoy. She hadn't observed him during the rest of the evening since she was paying attention to her own conversations, so maybe it was just Remi's antics. Antics which she was supposed to be pretending to be annoyed with.

"You know," she said in a thoughtful tone, looking up at Remi, whose head was currently bowed, "for someone whose mouth only has one job, you sure are talking a lot."

Cenric almost choked when the other Warlord Prince mentioned chafing, he'd really timed that sip of wine poorly. His broad shoulders shook with the laughter he barely contained, but he was determined not to be the one to break and laugh first. Even the Queen was joining in if her double entendre was on purpose, so he probably wasn't burning diplomatic bridges by having a little goddamn fun finally. As long as he managed to keep from doubling over laughing and causing a scene anyway.

“I know some healers who can probably give you a cream for that.” Cenric offered Remi once he'd gotten control enough of his voice to speak, a wicked gleam in his eyes. “Unless the chafing is part of the punishment of course.”  He raised an eyebrow at Shiori, as though to ask her. “It'd keep him from complaining quite so much, unless that's the fun of it.”  Cenric tried to keep his voice and face serious but could't manage it, a large smile slowly creeping onto his face despite his best efforts.

These people were fun, they were alive, and enjoyed a joke, unlike the aristos here who seemed to have been born in suits and had their sense of humour surgically removed. Remi had obviously been as bored out of his mind as Cenric if he pulled this routine out on an unknown Warlord Prince, his jewel might be dark enough that no-one would say anything to his face but even Cenric knew it could've caused Shiori a lot of political trouble. The tiny Queen seemed to have just as good a sense of humour about the whole thing, he figured she must've if she was willing to bring someone this unpredictable to the summit.

“Any scandalous rumours come out of these affairs? Or just scandalous rumours in general, we don't hear much in Beinn.” Cenric didn't really care about gossip, he was just interested in seeing what else Remi would make up given the chance. The less likely and more fantastical the better.

This was also a welcome relief for Remi. Since he had his small Queen had walked into the summit, he’d had people stare at him and then almost shit themselves when he looked their way. That was until his old friend walked into the room. The jewels they both wore might not have been easy for people in the room to grasp but their instincts would know when a bigger and far more dangerous predator walked in. After that he’d become less of a threat and more of something they took some kind of interest in.

The males had been approaching him to get an introduction to the Queen next to him and he’d been so rusty in the politics dance that he’d stumbled a few time. This was why he’d decided to have a laugh this time, plus, Cenric looked like a hardened warrior. Males like him enjoyed any chance they got to laugh with a female.

“I’ve never been obedient though.” she replied to Shiori with a small side smile in her direction, before going back to his ‘woe I am most abused’ expression, turning his dark eyed onto Cenric as he spoke of creams for chafing “Oh! That would be most welcome.” he said, earnestly before turning to face Shiori and getting down on his knees, large hands clutching the folds of her dress “Please, mistress, may I have the cream?” he mock pleaded.

He threw in a few more pleas before getting back up to his feet, then turning back to Cenric as he spoke of rumours “Well, there is a rumour she also rides a Unicorn and apparently,” he said, looking around and then lowering his voice to appear more constritable “one of the Queens, shits rainbows.”

Shiori's eyes went wide as Remi got down on his knees in front of her. She glanced quickly around to try to tell how much of a scene he was actually making since she did care a little bit. Then she looked down at Remi, who wasn't too far down while on his knees due to how short she was. She made a thoughtful sound, and then patted the top of his head, which wasn't something she often got to do to others. Usually she was on the receiving end of such actions.

"I will consider it. It depends on your behavior for the rest of the evening." There was a little bit of weight on the words 'the rest of the evening' which was meant to imply she was including the time after this part of the night was over. She wasn't really, but it was part of the joke.

Her jaw dropped when he mentioned the unicorn, and she continued to pretend to look agast as he talked about rainbows, which was also funny. If she wasn't currently looking surprised, she would have leaned in and agreed. Instead she had a different part to play.

"Remi!" She said, crossing her arms. "The unicorn is supposed to be a secret!" She emphasized the word 'secret' with a foot stomp for good measure.

“You don't all have unicorns here? They're everywhere in Beinn, we have to cull the population or they become pests.” Cenric lied glibly, doing his best to keep his face serious and failing badly. “And I thought all Queens shat rainbows, that's how we know they're Queens, right?” He looked to Shiori for confirmation, raising an eyebrow slightly. Cenric couldn't help it, he was enjoying himself, something he rarely got the chance for these days. Sure he had Aaron, but most of their interactions were business, and there was Boudicca, but half the time he wanted to strangle her. It was nice to relax with people he owed nothing to, and who didn't rely on him to survive like every resident of Beinn. Maybe it had been good for him to get out of Beinn, though this political summit wasn't where he'd choose to go.

Unfortunately he wasn't here to relax and Cenric needed to eventually get to the point, as much as he hated the thought of being serious. “How about anything I can use as blackmail material?” His voice taking on a serious tone now, despite how he tried to lighten it. “I'm here to get Aristos to help people, some juicy secrets would make it a lot easier.” It was meant to be a joke, but Cenric's voice contained a hint of bitterness despite his best efforts.

Giving a sigh full of frustration at himself, Cenric ran a hand through his hair, messing it further from it's once presentable state. “Sorry to get serious, but I really am here to get some aid for my Province, I'm sure you've heard about everything that's happening in Beinn.” He didn't go into details, he wasn't looking for pity from some of the first people he'd actually liked since getting here, but he wasn't going to let his pride or his own fun get in the way of helping Beinn.

“Unfortunately I think I pissed off your Warlord Prince earlier.” Cenric's eyes flicked around the room in a quick look, hoping to glare at the other man if only to make himself feel better for a second. “But if you put in a good word I promise a matching unicorn? Or at least a horse with a carrot on it's head.”
